Techniques
Diversified Technique
Diversified Technique is probably the most widely utilized and recognized method for adjusting the spine. It was developed by D.D. Palmer, D.C., the founder of chiropractic, and has been refined over the last 100 years. It involves applying a high velocity, low amplitude thrust to the joint. This type of adjustment usually creates an audible “popping” sound and is almost always painless. Some relief of symptoms is usually noted immediately or shortly after it is applied. The focus is on restoration to normal biomechanical function, and correction of subluxation. Diversified technique is useful for both spinal and extremity joint problems. |
Activator Method / Impulse Adjusting The Activator Method Chiropractic Technique is a diagnostic and treatment system used by chiropractors to treat many types of back pain, neck pain, and headaches. Activator Method uses a small, hand-held instrument called the Activator to deliver a gentle impulse force to the spine with the goal of restoring motion to the targeted spinal vertebra or joint. It is an alternative to the traditional manual form of spinal manipulation, known as the high velocity low amplitude thrust. Next to the Diversified technique, the Activator is the most common therapeutic intervention used by chiropractors. It is often used for small children, patients that are in too much pain to adjust with manual methods and it is also great for adjusting the extremities. It is also a good choice for any patient where a manual adjustment might be contraindicated. Impulse Adjusting Technique is similar to the Activator Method but it uses an electrically activated device that sends a series of soothing impulses of energy to re-align and restore mobility to problem areas in your spine. |
Flexion-Distraction
Flexion-distraction is a combination of traction, osteopathic manipulation and chiropractic manipulation. It was developed by James Cox, D.C. and is sometimes referred to as “Cox’s Technique”. With flexion-distraction the patient lies prone on a special table. The doctor applies a gentle force above the area of subluxation and then slowly and gently bends or flexes the table. This movement creates a traction/decompression force to the spine. It is very gentle and most patients enjoy the experience. It is great for treating bulging discs and spinal degeneration (arthritis). |
Trigger Point Therapy
Trigger point therapy a soft tissue technique used to relieve tight or spastic muscles. A trigger point is a tight spot in a muscle, sometimes referred to as a knot. Trigger point can cause pain locally or sometimes refer or “trigger” pain elsewhere. Each muscle has a unique pain referral pattern and can sometimes mimic other conditions. For instance, a trigger point in the shoulder can refer pain down the arm and may appear to the patient like carpel tunnel syndrome or tennis elbow. Trigger point therapy involves compressing the trigger point with either the thumb or finger. Sometimes and blunt instrument is used to compress the trigger point. This pressure will help break up the spasm and relieve the discomfort. |
According to Gray’s Anatomy: “The nervous system is the master system in the body and controls and coordinates all other systems such as respiratory, digestive, muscular, immune and so forth.”
